End of summer

I got up at six this morning and hit the road at six thirty after eating my generic bran flakes. I wore my flaming socks to match my helmet.

I decided to reconoiter the highway 56 bike path, so I rode headed north. On the stadium bike path there is a lot of trash. Looking south we see:

I was quite bitter about it at the time, and had all sorts of clever diatribes lined up to put here about professional sports, but I've forgotten them now. Probably for the better.

There was a homeless guy with a bicycle sleeping under another bridge.

It's nice going past Frys/Walmart early on a Sunday before the traffic appears. It's bad any other time!

I saw this memorial along side of the 395 (I don't know what it's called, that's what it was when I was a kid!). I read in Matthew Alice's column that she was killed by a hit and run driver.

This amazing sign pops out at you on the bike path along I-15. I had no idea what it was for, but a search on the trusty interweb EVENTUALLY came up with the information that it is for the Peñasquitos Pump Station. Check out Red Routes in San Diego County, California by Philip J. Erdelsky. Scroll down to MIRA MESA AND RANCHO PEÑASQUITOS/Cara Knott to read all the details.

I was wandering around trying to find the western terminus of the highway 56 bike path. It's still under construction!

The bike path is very nice along highway 56. This section is just before Black Mountain Road looking west. That is a ramp alongside the path, not the highway itself.

I returned along Black Mountain Road. It turns into olde 395 eventually. I saw this memorial along the side. I remember when this happened. He was a cyclist hit by a hit and run driver.

After looking at the memorial and taking the pictures I decided it was getting warm and I took off the Amazing Technicolor Jacket. I put on some more sunscreen. A guy stopped and asked me where the dump is.

Eventually I had to face the Montezuma Road hill. I REALLY don't care for this hill. maybe it's the steepness near the end, the longiness, or more likely, the noisy and sometimes nasty vehicles speeding past. And it's usually hot for some reason!

When I got home I took this picture. I look a little tired and sweaty! Since this is the last ride of summer, before I return to work, I wanted to capture the facial hair that I've been growing all summer before I shave it off.

end of ride

So the trip mileage is 44.56 miles (71.7 km)in 3 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds, for an average speed of 12.92 mph (20.8 kmh).

The Weekly Mileage is:

Jamis -- zero
Schwinn -- 93 miles

I was wondering when you were going back to work! What a bike ride you had. Thanks for the picks of the 56 bike path. We have driven by it a dozen times and was wondering what it actually looked like if you were riding it. Can't believe how much trash there was. I've never seen anything like that last memorial. As for the beard, I don't think I'm going to miss it. Doesn't it itch?
