Bicycle Energy BarsWe (and by "we" I mean my support team) made these for several years. They are the UGLIEST things, looking like big brown logs. But they were very tasty, in a healthy sort of way. They were so retro, back when retro was. Back when Bicycling had articles about cycling tourists growing sprouts in their handlebar bags for a nutritious snack while you ride!1/2 cup basic carob syrub*In large saucepan over low heat combine carob syrup, honey, butter and peanut butter until melted. Add all remaining ingredients, mixing well. Shape quicly with buttered hands into eight bars, about 3 inches long. Wrap each bar in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm. Makes 8 bars.
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons peanut butter
3/4 cup wheat germ
3/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup finely snipped pitted dates
Substitute dried apricots for the dates to make Apricot Bars.
*Basic Carob syrup1 cup carob powderIn small saucepan, mix carob and water. Bring to a boil over very low heat, stirring constantly. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes or until the syrup is completely smooth. Cox and store, covered, in the refrigerator. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.

Back to the future!
Steve the L. shared his secret recipe for quick energy... peanut butter and bananna sandwichettes!
Steve The L.'s Zippity Excellent Energy SandwichettesIngredents:Spread the peanut butter on the bread, stick some banana on there, cut into four parts (like Gaul). Stick in plastic bag (waxed paper, maybe?) and refrigerate until your ride.
- Whole Grain Bread (The finest kind)
- Peanut Butter (crunchy or plain, but organic, man, ORGANIC!)
- Bananas, sliced
Me, I just eat Albertson's Chewy Granola Bars. Eighteen grams of carb.

The Bicycle Energy Bars sound pretty good--minus the coconut. I'd have to make sure that the dried apricots weren't treated with sulfur though. Otherwise, the bars would do me in!
