
The yellow indicates the left-hand turn lane. The black is the cyclist's path. There is a curb between the left-hand turn lane and the opposing traffic lane, so there is no way he could have got to safety if he had missed the light.
I, of course, "take the lane" in a case like this, seeing how people can't seem to stay in their lanes when turning and seem to either swing wide or, more commonly, swing narrow (is that the correct term?). And that swinging wide is another reason I think lane-sharing is not good.
