I decided to ride to work because, as it turns out, I don't have to ferry someone to a doctor appointment. Instead, they made the appointment for AFTER work, so I can't go to the staff party. Of course, you that are in-the-know, know that this appointment is going to be cancelled.
Did I put this on the wrong blog?
I wanted fifty cents so I could buy a soda at work, but I couldn't find my Hello Kitty coin purse (never fear, it's in the vehicle). But I found fiftyfive (fifty-five (fifty five?)?) cents and a peso coin of some denomination. So I had a diet Pepsi for lunch, with a nickel (and a peso coin of some denomination) left over!

Huh?
I slept a lot yesterday and was wide-awake till four a.m., when I fell asleep for an hour. Then I got up (at five, an hour early), showered, at breakfast (Albersons Bran Flakes, but not in that order), and hit the road.
It was dark so I had the headlight and strobe going. I rode around the lake and the headlight helped me see all the walkers and runners who are unlit and unreflective.
After leaving the lake area I rode back and forth, forth and back, on various streets till I had fifteen miles, then showed up for work.
The computer guy came in the afternoon and replaced the hard drive in the busted computer. I sat and watched it update XP. I fell asleep sitting up for a few minutes.
After work I forthed and backed the neighborhood until I had another five miles and was home.
I fell asleep twice during the five o'clock news.
Tomorrow I have to go grocery shopping, so I'm taking the vehicle. And Wednesday I have to ferry people to the doctor, so I'm driving then, to.
Wanna make something of it, bud?

Finally, it's Friday!
Rode the Jamis three days this week to work. Wednesday and Thursday I was a little late because the bike-o-meter clock was off by fifteen minutes.
I want a big basket on the front of the Jamis, like this Kogswell Randonneur/Porteur. But then I've always loved wicker baskets, too. But where will I put the headlight?
It's been very warm and humid all week. I must admit it was nice driving the air-conditioned vehicle on Tuesday, with the stereo blasting my best of Parliament/Funkadelic tape. This weekend is supposed to be cooler and less humid.
Should be nice on Sunday for a ride. Where will I go? Knock on wood!

End of summer
I got up at six this morning and hit the road at six thirty after eating my generic bran flakes. I wore my flaming socks to match my helmet.

I decided to reconoiter the highway 56 bike path, so I rode headed north. On the stadium bike path there is a lot of trash. Looking south we see:

I was quite bitter about it at the time, and had all sorts of clever diatribes lined up to put here about professional sports, but I've forgotten them now. Probably for the better.
There was a homeless guy with a bicycle sleeping under another bridge.
It's nice going past Frys/Walmart early on a Sunday before the traffic appears. It's bad any other time!
I saw this memorial along side of the 395 (I don't know what it's called, that's what it was when I was a kid!). I read in Matthew Alice's column that she was killed by a hit and run driver.

This amazing sign pops out at you on the bike path along I-15. I had no idea what it was for, but a search on the trusty interweb EVENTUALLY came up with the information that it is for the Peñasquitos Pump Station. Check out Red Routes in San Diego County, California by Philip J. Erdelsky. Scroll down to MIRA MESA AND RANCHO PEÑASQUITOS/Cara Knott to read all the details.

I was wandering around trying to find the western terminus of the highway 56 bike path. It's still under construction!

The bike path is very nice along highway 56. This section is just before Black Mountain Road looking west. That is a ramp alongside the path, not the highway itself.

I returned along Black Mountain Road. It turns into olde 395 eventually. I saw this memorial along the side. I remember when this happened. He was a cyclist hit by a hit and run driver.

After looking at the memorial and taking the pictures I decided it was getting warm and I took off the Amazing Technicolor Jacket. I put on some more sunscreen. A guy stopped and asked me where the dump is.
Eventually I had to face the Montezuma Road hill. I REALLY don't care for this hill. maybe it's the steepness near the end, the longiness, or more likely, the noisy and sometimes nasty vehicles speeding past. And it's usually hot for some reason!

When I got home I took this picture. I look a little tired and sweaty! Since this is the last ride of summer, before I return to work, I wanted to capture the facial hair that I've been growing all summer before I shave it off.

So the trip mileage is 44.56 miles (71.7 km)in 3 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds, for an average speed of 12.92 mph (20.8 kmh).
The Weekly Mileage is:
Jamis -- zero
Schwinn -- 93 miles

Unexpected
I got up early and got on the road by 6:30. I am so proud of myself!
I thought there would be nothing to see, but I saw a lot of unexpected stuff.
When I got to Santee I took a couple of pictures of The Project.
It's coming along, you can see some banks are painted green.

A crane was lifting parts for the bridge.

I did a video of the crane. It's hardly worth the trouble of looking at, though. LATER: Looks like I uploaded video w/o titles to Youtube! Fixed it!
I saw the couple with the puppy again today. Actually, they have two dogs. But the puppy is cuter!
The bike lane up Jackson Drive hill was blocked by ten cars this morning! What's up with that?

But before I took that picture I took an accidental video. Oddly enough, nothing happens. LATER: Looks like I uploaded video w/o titles to Youtube! Fixed it!
When I was done I saw 15-20 people crossing Mission Gorge Road heading towards the cars, possibly, so maybe it was overflow from some function at Mission Trails Park. Well!
I rode up to the lake and took another picture there, so you can see the controversial Yellow Jacket.

You can get wallet size prints from flickr.com, I'm told...
I left the bike-o-meter in the garage, so I'm guessing I rode 25 miles today, at a not too great speed. LATER: 26.44 miles in 2 hours, 2 minutes, 0 seconds. That would be 13.2 mph, correct?
Remember, you can usually click on the photos to see larger versions. Which are sometimes better.
Thanks to everyone who leaves a comment, it's nice to know SOMEONE is reading this!
A REMINDER: The list of blogs on the right are ones I've found interesting. I check them everyday. Most of them are updated regularly. Check 'em out, as we say in the libery!
I thought there would be nothing to see, but I saw a lot of unexpected stuff.
- A car stalled in the middle of Fletcher Parkway (3 lanes).
- A car/truck accident at Mollison and Broadway (motorcycle cop talking to drivers).
- A Fox TV interview with a police office on Mollison, a few hundred feet down the road.

June gloom
Instead of sunshine, this August has been more like June, what with the overcast in the morning. It was so hot in July, and now this nice (to me!) weather. I wonder what September will bring? It's usually rather hot in September and October.
Rode to the dam this morning, but didn't follow the Dam Ride precisely. Stop to watch a helicopter lifting stuff at Grossmont center, which I've seen before, but this time I took a little movie of it.
Out in Santee at the intersection of Cuyamaca and N. Marshall/Weld I observed a guy on a bicycle (NOT a cyclist!!) riding on the trolley tracks (while the trolley was coming). I don't mean crossing the tracks, I mean parallel-to-the-rails. And a minute later saw a not-a-cyclist riding against traffic on Cuyamaca, heading south.
Saw the couple with the puppy on what I have learned is the Father Junipero Serra Trail, formerly the Padre Dam bike path.
Here's a picture of the "backside" of Cowles Mountain taken near the trail head at Mesa and Prospect

Lot of people walking their dogs at Lake Murray. Time for a photoessay?
Did the 12.8 miles in the first hour of the ride.
Total trip was 22.3 miles in 1 hour, 46 minutes EXACTLY*!
*Not counting stoplights, etc.

Cloudier Sunday
It was a cloudy morning, and I managed to get up early enough to hit the road, to the dam, by a quarter of seven. At least I got into the garage by then. I had to battle a couple of spiders whos webs I kept getting tangled up in. Scary!
Finaly I got going. Since I rode yesterday I was a little tired, but not too much. Let us face it, 20 miles is not that far!
Took a picture at Lake Murray at the end of the road. Be sure to click on the picture to go to the Flickr page so you can see all the "humerous" notes I put on the picture. And you can see the larger version, too, for more detail.

I went around the lake too fast (well, 16 mph or so) and annoyed everyone, I am sure.
When I got home I found I had locked my keys in the garage.
Trip mileage was 21.91 miles (35.28 km) in 1:44:59 for an average of 12.52 mph (20.15 kph)
Weekly Mileage:
Jamis -- Zero
Schiwnn -- 91 miles

Sunny Saturday
I got up a little late and so didn't get started untill nearly 8 o'clock. First I went to the library to drop off "Lost & found" by Alan Dean Foster. On the way I noticed my hands felt funny on the handlebars. I, of course, had forgotten my gloves. And since they were hanging (ON PURPOSE)on the pump, that means I forgot the pump. Well, I'm not going far without my pump, with MY history of flats, so, of course, I went back and got the stuff. By the way, once I forgot my helmet and only noticed when I tried to look in my helmet mirror...
Did the classic Dam Ride. Pretty sunny this morning, and since I didn't grease up (not even my NOSE) I hope I don't get a burn! Or something.
Followed an old guy around Lake Murray. Since he was going around 9-10 mph I figured no one would yell at me for going too fast. It was really hard to go that slow, though. On the other hand, 15 mph is a good clip for me. I think 13.5 mph is my speed.
Speaking of speed, I say again, 30 mph down hill gets me nervous. 40 mph scares me.
Speaking of hills, why do I feel less manly if I use granny gear? I bought it to go up hills, dad gum it, I'm gonna use it!
Somehow the rear deraileur got out of adjustment and I overshifted the big cog. Adjusted that when i got home.
So, I rode 23.2 miles in 1 hour, 56 minutes, and 59 seconds for an Average Speed of 11.9 MPH (19.15 KMH).

All lubed up
Here's the stuff I use for greasing up the bikes:

From left to right:
I have a lot of other bottles of gunk laying around, but these are the ones I use on the bikes. I also using the Plews oiler sometimes, but I mainly bought it for nostalgia, my dad had one when I was a kid and we (that is, I) filled it with water for squirting. It was a most excellent squirter! It also rusted up real fast...

The aluminium holder was custom-made, by me. The oiler tends to leak, hence the sock.

From left to right:
- Johnson Paste Wax
- WD-40
- Finish Line Synthetic Bicycle Lubricant, with TEFLON!
- Cycle Pro White Lithium Cycle Grease
- Tri Flow Superior Lubricant, with TEFLON!
- Schwinn Touch-up Paint
- Panaf Lock Lubricant
- Phil Wood Waterproof Grease
- Phil Wood Tenacious Oil
- Pedro's Bio Degreaser

Sunny
Not so many clouds this morning, and it's getting warmer. I had a flat front tire before I started, so there was a delay. I suspect the flat came from the thorn I picked out of the tire the other day. Slow leak!
I did the Dam Ride this morning. I saw a couple bicycles someone had put out with the garbage. One was a beat-up Schwinn mountain bike. The other was was an old road bike with bar end shifters. I should go back and grab it, just for the shifters! It look like things are coming along at the Santee construction project. Not much to see this morning untill I got to Lake Murray. Around the back side near the terlet I came upon two kids who were startled (as was I) when a hawk burst from the bushes and flew alongside the road for 30 feet or so. The kids ran to their grandma to tell her what they saw. Very cute!
So, I rode 23.3 miles in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 38 seconds. Not a heck of an average speed!
I forgot to mention that I took off the rear wheel the other day and lubed the freewheel with a great deal of Phil's Tenacious Oil. It's green! Now I don't hear all that clicking. Then I lubed the chain with Tri-Flow. Or maybe I did that first.

Morning smells
Oh, the scents wafting on the morning air!
- Garbage (within 3/4 miles of the La Mesa garbage plant)
- Bacon (Fletcher Hills and Santee--I'm hungry!)
- Sewer (Padre Dam bike path, near museum)
- Barbeque (Fletcher Hills on way back. In the morning? Before 8 A.M.?)

Something different
Rode out Olde Highway 80 this morning. The weather was perfect for biking. Cloudy and cool, the sun poked it's head out a little in the back county, then went away. The clouds didn't go away completely till I got home. Perfect! The temperature was 78 degrees fahrenheit (25.5555556 degrees Celsius) when I got home. I checked.
I am fascinated with those memorials people put up on the side of the road. I always wonder what happened.

I always dreamed of owning a caboose. The Flinn Springs store has one. And the store has a for sale sign on it!

Here's another memorial. It's nice to see somone is taking care of it.

El Capitan in Lakeside had a little cloud on it, so I thought I better take a picture of it.

I took this picture at the turn-around point in the ride. It's at the top of the grade on Alpine Blve., before you get to the intersection with Arnold Way.

On the way back I stopped at Summers Past to see the sweet pea maze. Well, the maze is there but not sweet peas, it's this purple flower.

In the center of the maze is a fairy garden.

I bet my gnomes can take their fairies!
I covered 35.4 miles (56.9707776 kilometers) in 2 hours, 44 minutes, and 18 seconds, not counting stoplights and photo shoots. Which comes out to an average of 12.95 mph (20.8410048 kilometers per hour)
Weekly Mileage:
Jamis -- nada
Schwinn -- 76 miles (122.310144 kilometers)

Down the...
Did the Dam Ride backwards this morning. Well, not BACKWARDS, but in reverse. Well, not like a car, but I rode the route back...oh, I give up.
A lady on the Mission Trails bike path shouted out, "Why don't you get a unicycle!" at me when I coasted towards her, riding no hands.
Saw this pretty flower, rode past, turned around and went back to take a picture of it. Remember you can click on the image to get to a larger one, usually. A walker of dogs told me it was a primrose.

Saw this in the bike lane on Mission Gorge Road in Santee. Roadkill? Santee T-bone? Some poor bicyclist?

I didn't follow the Dam Ride completely, more the spirit of the thing. I got out of El Cajohn by going up Travelodge. Found the back entrance to Harry Griffin and snuck through the park. I've been looking at maps!
I noticed Tuesday that the tool was gone.
So, today's ride was 19.9 miles in 1 hour, 37 minutes, not including stop lights, picture taking, or a rest stop.

The Other Day
I was driving the vehicle the other day. I was turning left from Baltimore to El Cajohn Blvd. and noticed in the rear view mirror a bicycle coming up about five cars behind. Instead of staying the turn lane he darted into the opposing traffic lane and made the turn INSIDE of the turning cars behind me. It was so wierd, it was about the stupidest thing I've ever seen, except on TV! After passed him he swung over into the bike lane. Unbelievable!

The yellow indicates the left-hand turn lane. The black is the cyclist's path. There is a curb between the left-hand turn lane and the opposing traffic lane, so there is no way he could have got to safety if he had missed the light.
I, of course, "take the lane" in a case like this, seeing how people can't seem to stay in their lanes when turning and seem to either swing wide or, more commonly, swing narrow (is that the correct term?). And that swinging wide is another reason I think lane-sharing is not good.

Garbageday
Did NOT do the Dam Ride today. Sort of did a loop along the rim overlooking El Cajohn and then out to Navajoe, around Lake Murray, then home again, home again..
Very nice today, coolish and cloudy. I'm SURE there weren't any UV rays, so I didn't grease up. Putting on sunscreen is so yucky, I dislike being feeling greasy.
There were not very many people at the lake, however, the blond chick was there, as usual.
Whilst pedaling along Navajoe I tried to shift the front derailleur, it did nothing. I stopped and noticed the cable was all buggered up and had slipped. So I loosend the bolt with my trusy adjustable wrench, picked out the broken pieces of steel, pulled the cable taut and tightened the bolt. When I adjusted the shifter last week or so I cut the frayed end off and superglued the end in lieu of a cable ferrule. I THOUGHT it was all prettied up. I guess NOT! I will have to replace the cable. Probably should do both of them. But then I need some cable housing. And then I should do the brake cables, too, which ALSO need new cable housing! It never ends!
Today Mileage: 20.9 miles in 1 hour, 44 minutes, 29 seconds.
